Frugal Friday – Paper Bag Brag Book

Reduce.  Reuse.  Recycle.

So I’m going to “recycle” this post and encourage you to find something you can rescue from the the landfill.  This is a great way to keep paper bags out of the landfill.  Get creative maybe you can save multiple items from the landfill.

Grampy’s Big Brag Book.  This is a paper bag album.  In true paper bag fashion each page has a large pocket with a tag.  I made these to look like file folders using the envelope punch board by We Are Memory Keepers, however you can use a file folder and trace the tab onto your paper.  This album is packed with tags and pockets and minis within the mini… oh my.  I used a pony tail elastic to hold the album closed and my Bind-it-All to bind it.

I, of course, had to embellish the back cover because I can, why not and it’s another page, so lets use it.

8 1/2″ x 11″ Organizer

I made this organizer a few years ago.  Inside the front cover are two large full length pockets, a box style pocket with a flap for business cards, sticky notes and a pen.  There is also a magnetized hidden area behind the front cover which houses more 8 1/2″ x 11″ paper, inspirational sayings, two photos and a pocket for money.  On the flip side of the inspirational sayings is a changeable year at a glance.  Inside the back cover is a small triangular pocket that holds 8 1/2″ x 11″ paper.

Shopping Organizer

I put a couple coats of Mode Podge on the outside of the cover for easy clean up.  The outside cover is entirely made of chipboard for durability.  It also has a magnetic closure.

There’s a sticky note page right inside the front cover for all those last minute items we all forget and never seem to have paper and pen handy so we can write them down (the sticky notes are chocolate themed of course).  We might as well be honest here too, the older we get the more sticky notes we need.

Behind the sticky note page is a secret page and pocket with a magnetic closure.  This would be a place for keeping the secret shopping list, you know the one with the chocolate items on it (shh don’t tell anyone).  Is it obvious that I like chocolate?  Okay I do but it’s in our DNA so really it’s to be expected.

Inside the first page on the left is a file folder system for organizing coupons.  On the right is a series of pockets for store rewards cards or credit cards.

The second page has on the left side three pockets, one large one for shopping lists and two smaller ones for receipts.  The right side has more file folders for coupons.

The back of the second page has another pocket.  The inside back cover has a place for some photos and a pen.

The two pages can be removed if desired leaving the shell of the organizer.

I added lace for touchy feelly interest and I like a vintage aged look so I added tons of ink on the edges of every thing.  This is a fun and pretty way of doing the monotonous chore of shopping.

6″ x 6″ Wedding Mini Album

This is a wedding album that I made for a friends wedding.

The pages of this album are made with a single 12″ x 12″ piece of paper.  In the way the paper is folded this creates four pages.  So to make a 12 page album you only need 3 sheets of 12″ x 12″ paper.  Flip ups, flip downs and flip outs can be created to make space for lots of pockets, tags, and full size photos.  Of course I had to embellished the back of my album.  I like doing that with my cards and albums because I can and it’s another surface to make pretty that often gets ignored.

Meander or Maze Albums

The way a meander or maze album is made is the reasoning behind the name.  Any size square paper will work but it must be square.  So if you have a 12″ x 12″ piece of cardstock divide it into fourths equally (at the 3″, 6″ and 9″ measurements) then score and fold.  Do this again in the other direction (your paper should resemble a tic tac toe game with one extra line in each direction).  Then on one side cut the first score line up to the last score that runs in the opposite direction being careful not to cut past the score line.  Rinse, lather, repeat on the last score line.  Turn the cardstock half way around so that the uncut side is facing you and rinse, lather, repeat on the middle score line.  At this point your cardstock should look like a giant M or W.  Next you just start accordion folding at one end and continue to the other end.

They make great little brag books for holidays.

If a 12″ x 12″ piece of paper is used the album will measure 3″ wide x 3″ high.  If a cover is added the album will be a little larger.  It will have 16 pages, and depending on how the pages are glued together they can have 6 pockets and 6 tags or even more than that.  They can hold 28 photos sometimes even more than that.

You can even cover over the spine with paper, fabric or ribbon to make them look more like a cute little book.

Depending on how the pages are glued together you can have top loading pockets or side loading pockets or a combination of top and side pockets.  You can even completely glue the pages together to create an album with no pockets.  Great for passwords or a small journal for a pre-teen.

They can be as fancy or as simple as you want them to be.

You can even have a little fun and put two or three or more albums together to make a thicker album like I did here.

For fun just to see how small I could go I made one with an 8″ x 8″ square and 6″ x 6″ square of paper.

8″ x8″ and 6″ x6″ Starting Paper Meander or Maze Album

The album on the left is made with an 8″ x8″ square.  The 6″ x6″ is on the right.  I did put tiny little tags in the one on the right and tiny little photos could be put into both albums.

As you can see I went a little wild making a lot of these albums (they’re very addictive, fun and cute).

Faux Envelope Mini

This album is made in the style of a card and envelope album.  I used cardstock for the entire base instead of envelopes and cards.  Each page (the “envelope”) has a pocket with a tag (the “card”).  All the pages are constructed the same but embellished differently.
